Double cleansing: why Korean women start with a cleansing oil

Double cleansing: why Korean women start with a cleansing oil

Double cleansing is probably the most rewarding Korean habit: two minutes in the evening, and the entire routine that follows works better. The principle is chemical before it is aesthetic: most of what settles on the skin during the day is oily, and oil dissolves oil. Hence the cleansing oil first, then a water-based cleanser to finish. Here is the explanation, the method and the product choices.

Why a cleansing oil comes first

Sebum, water-resistant sunscreen, foundation, pollution particles: all of it is lipophilic. A classic foaming gel, formulated to disperse in water, has to force its way to lift them, and it often succeeds by taking the barrier's own lipids with it. The result is that "tight" feeling many people mistake for cleanliness.

A cleansing oil does the opposite: it blends effortlessly with the oily matter on the skin, dilutes it, then, thanks to its emulsifiers, turns into a fluid milk on contact with water and rinses away. Make-up comes off without rubbing, the sunscreen filter too, and the barrier keeps its own lipids. This is why the double cleanse was first popularised by women who wore SPF every day, long before it became a "trend".

Oil, balm or milk: which one to choose?

  • Cleansing oil (in a pump bottle) is the most fluid and the fastest to emulsify. Ideal for light to medium make-up and daily SPF. Ma:nyo Pure Cleansing Oil, based on plant oils (olive, soybean, jojoba) and free of mineral oil, is the Korean reference for the format: it removes foundation without leaving a film and rinses off in seconds.
  • Cleansing balm is a solidified oil, handier for travel and more "enveloping" on heavy or waterproof make-up. It needs a little more water to emulsify.
  • Cleansing milk or micellar water suit very reactive skin that cannot tolerate oil, with lower efficacy on water-resistant sunscreens.

Contrary to popular belief, cleansing oil is also suitable for oily skin: it does not add sebum, it removes the sebum already there. What matters is that it rinses off completely. An oil that leaves a greasy film after rinsing is simply not the right one for you.

The second cleanser: rinse without stripping

Once the oil has been emulsified and rinsed, a thin trace of the emulsion and the water-soluble impurities (sweat, dust) remain on the skin. The second, water-based cleanser takes care of them. It must be gentle: slightly acidic pH, fine foam rather than dense lather, no harsh sulphates. Two very different options in our catalogue:

  • Arencia Fresh Green Rice Mochi Cleanser, a rice and green tea cleanser with the texture of mochi paste, which works into a dense foam and rinses very clean. Combination to oily skin loves it.
  • Round Lab Birch Juice Cleanser, a hydrating foam with birch sap, formulated at a gentle pH and designed for dry, sensitive skin or skin that tends to feel tight after cleansing.

The method, step by step

  1. Dry hands and dry face. This is the step everyone gets wrong: the oil must go on dry skin to properly dissolve make-up and SPF.
  2. One to two pumps of oil, massaged for thirty to sixty seconds in circular motions, paying attention to the sides of the nose and the lash line. This massage is also a genuinely relaxing moment.
  3. Emulsify with a little lukewarm water in your hands: the oil turns milky. Massage for another ten seconds.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water, never hot.
  5. Second cleanser: lather a hazelnut-sized amount between your hands, massage for twenty seconds, rinse.
  6. Pat dry with a clean towel, then move straight on to your toner: skin that is still slightly damp absorbs better.

When to double cleanse, and when to skip it

In the evening, every time you have worn make-up or sunscreen: which, if you follow our advice, means every evening. In the morning, on the other hand, double cleansing is pointless: the skin has only accumulated overnight sebum, so a simple rinse or a light foam is enough. Cleansing twice both morning and evening is the most common beginner mistake, and the first cause of weakened barrier we see.

On days without make-up or SPF (a whole day indoors, for example), the second cleanser alone may be enough. Listen to your skin: if it feels comfortable after a single step, do not add a second one on principle.

The mistakes that dry out the skin

  • Applying the oil to a wet face: it emulsifies before it has dissolved anything.
  • Using a "purifying" gel or a bar of soap as the second cleanser: this is the gentle step, not the stripping step.
  • Rinsing with hot water, which dissolves the barrier's lipids.
  • Rubbing with a towel or a flannel, when the oil massage has already done the work.
  • Massaging for more than two minutes on sensitive or acne-prone skin, which can encourage redness.

And after cleansing?

Perfectly cleansed skin is skin ready to receive its treatment. It is step 1 of the five-step routine we detail in our Korean skincare routine for beginners. If you would rather start from a coherent set, our double cleanse and barrier routine pairs the Ma:nyo oil with an essence and a ceramide cream, to cleanse thoroughly at night without ever sacrificing the skin barrier.

FAQ: double cleansing

Does cleansing oil cause breakouts?

A well-formulated oil that emulsifies and rinses off completely does not clog pores. Problems come from insufficient rinsing or from a non-emulsifying oil (pure plant oil) that leaves a film. If in doubt, choose a light formula and rinse for longer.

Can I remove eye make-up with the oil?

Yes, that is actually one of its great advantages: mascara, including waterproof, dissolves without rubbing. Close your eyes, gently massage the lashes from top to bottom, emulsify and rinse. If your eyes are sensitive, use a dedicated eye make-up remover.

Is double cleansing necessary for dry skin?

Yes, if you wear SPF or make-up. Then choose a very gentle, hydrating second cleanser, such as a low-pH foam, and apply your toner immediately afterwards. Dry skin suffers more from the wrong cleanser than from a well-done double cleanse.

Do I need a specific cleansing oil for the face?

Yes. A cooking oil or a pure plant oil contains no emulsifier, does not rinse off and leaves an occlusive film. Cleansing oils are formulated to turn into a milk on contact with water: that is the whole difference.
