AHA/BHA/PHA Exfoliants
AHAs break the bonds between corneocytes (glycolic, small, is more irritating; mandelic, larger, is gentler); BHA, oil-soluble, penetrates the sebum inside the pore, ideal for oily/acne-prone skin; PHA (gluconolactone) is gentler with no documented loss of anti-aging efficacy over 12 weeks. Real photosensitization confirmed by the FDA: sunscreen is essential during and after use.
How to choose
For oily skin with visible pores or blackheads, a BHA pad or toner two to three evenings a week remains the reference step. For sensitive skin or beginners, PHA or mandelic acid offer gradual exfoliation with less stinging. For a dull complexion and uneven texture, a mild AHA (lactic) on a dual-sided pad combines exfoliation and soothing in a single step. In every case, do not stack an exfoliant and retinol on the same evening, and space out applications if the skin reddens or feels tight.
