Centella / Cica
Centella asiatica (cica) activates mechanisms documented in lab studies (TGF-beta/Smad for collagen, NF-kB inhibition for inflammation); its strongest clinical evidence, however, concerns the oral route — a marketing shortcut we prefer to flag. It remains a reference for soothing redness and sensitive skin.
Which skin it suits
Sensitive, reactive or redness-prone skin, skin marked after acne, and any skin weakened by retinol or an exfoliant. The risk of sensitization is low, but two cases of dermatitis have been documented on damaged skin: apply centella to intact skin, not to a wound. As an ampoule or serum, it goes on after the toner, morning and evening, and combines freely with niacinamide, ceramides or hyaluronic acid. Fragrance-free formulas are the safer choice for the most reactive profiles.
